Clara + Mom & Dad + Dinosaurs // City Gardens // Downtown St. Louis, MO

I love when children surprise me. I did a recent session with this young beauty, Clara, and her sweet parents. It turns out that Clara is pretty obsessed with dinosaurs. It seems like boys and girls are pretty stereotypical— which absolutely surprised me after becoming a Mom. My son, Finn is obsessed with all things wheels (cars, trucks, buses, trains). I hear from other parents of boys that they are the same way. And that girls love all things typical girl (dolls, crafts, animals, etc.). It does seem like there are more rough and tumble (I like to play with trucks too!) girls, then boys that want to play with dolls. But I've heard it all. ANYWAYS, I loved that Clara was really into dinosaurs instead of dolls (at least at the moment). Finn doesn't even have an interest in them at the moment.

We had such a nice time shooting at City Garden in downtown St. Louis, MO. They have a great splash area, surrounded with sculptures and gardens. I love taking Finn there since it is so versatile. It also has an amazing view of the arch!

Enjoy!

Girls rule // Maternity shoot // Northern VA

Sorry guys, but you are officially outnumbered. This adorable family that I have been photographing for almost three years now, just welcomed a baby girl into their home two weeks ago. I was thrilled to do the maternity shoot for them a month ago, before the Little One arrived. You will have to come back to see the photos of Emmaline, which I will be posting soon. But for now, I hope you enjoy these special photos of the family anticipating her arrival.

More than anything, I am excited for Ellie, who will be a big sister. My family dynamic is the same as this bunch, with the boy as the oldest, followed by two sisters. I had the pleasure of being the youngest sister in my family–and was pretty much obsessed with my big sister. Sure, we fought a lot, but I don't know where I would be without her! I still call her daily for advice! She is my one constant friend. My best friend. And having a big brother to look out for both of us was extremely comforting. He really didn't give us a hard time that often either. He tried his best to avoid our girl drama ;)

So ladies, you rule the roost. Men of the house, be prepared for a house filled with a lot of nail polish, curling irons and Barbie dolls. And I hope you have your own bathroom. Because even if one sister is more of a tomboy, the other one could very well be a girly-girl. But I'll guarantee you this: that little Emmaline is going to be smitten over her big sister, regardless of her interests. She might try to dance like Ellie, run like Ellie and play sports like Ellie. She will carve her own path in the end, but she will always be grateful for that big sister who helped her find her way.

A shoot on Lake Erie- behind the scenes

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season! It snuck up on me fast, and flew right on by.

I was lucky enough to see all of my immediate family, near and afar. Over Thanksgiving we all headed to the Midwest to see my sister and her clan of boys. She has an awesome little family; three boys and a Rottie named Petunia. My sister is my other half. I would be lost without her. I wish we lived closer, but I'll take what I can get.

Here are some behind the scene photos, in addition to the actual photos of me shooting my sister's family photos on Lake Erie, (my husband took iPhone pics of me shooting them). You'll also see a photo of my hubby photographing my sister, brother and I in one. My Dad is the one that took the holiday photo of my little fam (see previous post). Any photo of me in it was taken by either my hubby or Dad. So yea, I ask the family to step up if I need to be in the photo. I just adjust the settings and hand the camera over... and pray they get me in focus!

I have some more awesome shots from the visit, which I'll post soon. Here is the bunch from the Lake. And to any of you who think you can't have a photoshoot in the winter, you are wrong (have you seen my shoot of Finn in the highchair while it is snowing- which the Grandparents thought was cruel, but he loved it, I swear). My sister's boys LOVED being outside, regardless of the chill in the air. Natural light is best, and my absolute standard for shooting.
